It looks as though Crystal Palace are set to offer a contract to Ballymena starlet Matthew Shelvin, after the striker impressed during a recent trial with us.
The move was spoken about a few weeks ago when news of the 16-year-old’s trial period with us first surfaced, following a goal-packed start to life in the Ballymena first team, prompting his manager to suggest that he would be snapped up by a far bigger club than the Irish outfit in a matter of weeks.
The coaches at Palace are believed to have played the teenager in a number of trial matches at differing age groups, allowing him to prove his true worth to the club by scoring regularly. One game in particular saw him bag a hat-trick, which appears to have been enough for us to bite the bullet and offer him a full-time contract in SE25.
Whilst he is due to have another trial with Sheffield United imminently, Alan Pardew and co. will no doubt hope that the lure of a potential place in the Premier League will be enough to sway Shelvin towards us when it comes to decision time.
With the likes of Kwesi Appiah and Keshi Anderson already on our books, Palace are amassing a decent number of prolific goalscorers just below the first-team, which can only bode well for the long-term future of the club, should they continue to progress at the rate they have so far.
Let’s hope that Shelvin does indeed plump for a move to South London when the time comes for him to make his call.
