After a spell of fixtures which has seen us face three of last season’s top four, the boss is rightly pleased to be sitting pretty in the Premier League table with nine points to our name as we head to White Hart Lane.

Praising his players for the application they have shown in the opening few weeks of the campaign, Pardew feels as though our displays in the games so far can be looked upon as a yardstick for our progress under his management, allowing us to approach the upcoming tie against Mauricio Pochettino’s men with real confidence.

Whilst admitting that we don’t have anywhere near the same level of infrastructure and spending power as Spurs, the gaffer was understandably keen to highlight that man for man, we are now more than a match for them in terms of the relative strengths of our best starting XIs.

There is also footage of Pardew’s now infamous suggestion that Spurs will comfortably finish inside the “top ten”, which caused a large backlash from the Spurs faithful across social media yesterday. Having managed to comfortably achieve that feat in nine of the last ten Premier League seasons, it appears to have been taken as an insult rather than a compliment by the vast majority of their fan-base. Whether or not he meant it in those terms, we will never know, but it provoked a chuckle or two from our side of the divide yesterday afternoon.
