According to the Croydon Advertiser, Connor Wickham, Joe Ledley and Damien Delaney will all face last-minute fitness tests ahead of this Sunday’s trip to Tottenham.
The trio were absent from last weekend’s frustrating defeat to Manchester City but were all expected to have a chance of returning to the for our jaunt to North London this Sunday.
Whilst Ledley has struggled to establish himself as a first-team regular at any point this season, Delaney and Wickham are both seen as pivotal members of the starting XI by boss Alan Pardew, leaving him to cross his fingers for their return to training this morning.
None of the aforementioned group have trained with the squad since sustaining their injuries, but after every player was given a day off yesterday, there is hope amongst the coaching staff that at least two of the three will join in with their teammates properly before the final decisions are made on our squad to face Pochettino and co.
Brede Hangeland deputised for Delaney last Sunday, whilst Yannick Bolasie was chosen to lead the line in Wickham’s absence, despite Pardew having Gayle, Campbell and Bamford fully fit and available for selection. Clearly, given the positive comments offered by the manager in relation to Connor following our win over Chelsea, he is now seen as our undisputed first choice striker when available for selection.
Clearly full of confidence despite the manner of our last defeat, we travel to Tottenham in search of a long overdue triumph, which would only be aided by the return to fitness of our walking wounded.
It does however say a great deal for our newfound strength in depth that we will fancy ourselves to pick up all three points in North London regardless of their inclusion.
