Following Crystal Palace’s shock 2-1 win away to Chelsea, the media have been abuzz with praise for our early season performances and now, ThinkFootball are tipping us for a tilt at the Premier League title.
It took us a minute or two to realise that the site in question was almost certainly a US-based football blog, who, without the years of crushing disappointments and false dawns to draw upon, have got a tad carried away with our start to the 2015/16 season.
Yes, on the face of it, a win over the defending champions on their own turf, alongside two further triumphs and a closely run defeat to Arsenal should give everyone associated with the football club cause for optimism, but as we all know perfectly well, a league season is a marathon rather than an August-timed sprint.
Should we keep up this startling run of form until Christmas, vanquishing the likes of Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur in the process, then we may just start to believe that a push for the top six is a feasible objective, but if we’re all honest with ourselves, talk of a title run is simply too far-fetched to be taken seriously.
We sincerely hope that we’re forced to revisit this article to apologise in June, fresh from a month-long bender after our stunning title win, but for now, we’ll place this particular prediction in the drawer marked “unlikely”.
