The news of Glenn Murray’s move from Crystal Palace to Bournemouth has reignited speculation linking Charlie Austin with a switch to SE25.
The 26-year-old has been the subject of intense transfer speculation all summer long, having been touted for a move to one of around 10 top flight clubs before the window shuts, but, at the time of writing, QPR appear to still be standing firm over their valuation of the frontman.
Admittedly, Murray’s Bournemouth move will have given the Eagles hierarchy another £5 million to play with but, thanks to the £15 million price tag that the Hoops have stuck to for months on end, we may still encounter serious trouble in striking a deal to bring Austin to Selhurst Park.
You can be relatively sure that Austin himself would be open to a deal, given the upward mobility we have enjoyed under the management of Alan Pardew in 2015, but admirably, Charlie has refused to kick up a fuss throughout this transfer saga, choosing instead to keep his head down and play, just as it was right to.
Indeed, SkyBet have slashed the odds of Austin moving to Palace from 16/1 to an industry best 6/4 at the time of writing, but with time ticking, it will be a truly hectic few hours if we are to pursue a deal for the frontman.
Of course you could take Alan Pardew at his word and insist, as he did only a few days ago that we are not interested in the QPR striker, but you get the feeling that the loss of Murray may have provoked a change of heart for the Palace boss, as he looks to improve upon last season’s 10th placed finish by quite some distance this time around.
Unlike recent years, we have until just 6pm to push any deal through, so the hours between now and then could and almost certainly will be extremely hectic for all concerned.
Let’s just hope we at Selhurst Park will be smiling when all has been said and done.
