Paul Merson Predicts A Palace Loss At Chelsea.. Looks A Fool

Paul Merson’s opinions on football hold less weight than Tony Pulis’ fashion tips, as proven by the former Arsenal man’s prediction for yesterday’s game against Chelsea

Now working for Sky Sports News, “Merse” as he is affectionately known by his chums at the channel, predicts Premier League results from week to week, and as you would expect, he was extremely sceptical over our chances of success this weekend.

Speaking about the game in prospect, Paul said:

“Palace fell over the line against Shrewsbury, which shocked me, and Villa. They’ll score at Stamford Bridge because they’re quick on the break away from home, but the hosts will be too strong.”

For some reason, there are still plenty of people across the British sporting press who view us as an easy touch despite the stunning record we have under current boss Alan Pardew. Having picked up more points away from home than any team in the Premier League in 2015, Merson and co. may now start to soften their views on us, but we wouldn’t bank on it.

Sitting second in the league table as we head into the international break, we have plenty of time to soak up every ounce of enjoyment from a stellar start to the season, regardless of what certain pundits may think.

We are more likely to lose at home to a bottom half team than we are away at a top half team. Translating that counter attacking form into points at home will be key to Palace bettering last seasons results and pushing for a Europa League spot. Pardew may find that there are better team selections for home fixtures as opposed to away fixtures. I’ll leave that one for you Hoppo to maybe do a piece on !

@Richard C – totally agree. We need to address our team selection and tactics for home games. Something’s gotta change, otherwise it’ll be like last season. The games I went to against the bottom half teams were very disappointing.

As for Merson, I usually find his predictions are fairly accurate. Most pundits would’ve predicted Chelsea to win yesterday, so a bit harsh to criticise him IMO.

What a result though!! We look genuinely dangerous and now have the quality to our chances away.
