The Daily Mirror are reporting that Crystal Palace could be about to re-enter the race to sign QPR’s Charlie Austin.
Fresh from a dramatic late victory over Aston Villa at Selhurst Park on Saturday afternoon, the article suggests that Alan Pardew remains extremely keen on bringing the Hoops frontman to Selhurst Park despite the £15 million price tag that his current employers seem so intent on striking to.
Whether or not there is the slightest shred of truth in the article is up for debate, but without a journalist’s name even put next to the piece, we are forced to wonder if it’s just the newspaper regurgitating a weeks old tale in the hope of generating some Sunday morning web traffic for their site.
The rationale behind the piece hinges on the claim that Dwight Gayle is all set to ship out of SE25 early next week for a fee of around £8 million, regardless of the fact that, at the time of writing, no such bid has been made for his services from a single feasible suitor.
As much as I, and I dare say, plenty of others would love to see the QPR frontman donning the red and blue shirt at some stage this season, it does look as though the west Londoners are all set to stand firm over his price, which, if the last few weeks are anything to go by, will mean Palace’s obvious attempts to restructure a deal will hit the skids pretty quickly.
As a snap verdict, it looks like a poorly thought out piece from a newspaper intent on peddling rumour and speculation in place of any genuine news.
Shall we move on, or have they got it spot on this time? We’ll soon find out.
