Speaking after his side’s 1-1 draw with Fulham at Craven Cottage yesterday afternoon, Alan Pardew admitted that there is still no deal in place to bring Connor Wickham to the football club, despite reports to the contrary within the last 24 hours.
Earlier this week, countless news outlets suggested that Palace had reached an agreement with Sunderland over a fee for the 22-year-old, with the sum supposedly ranging from anywhere between £6-9 million, but as of yet, it sounds as if personal terms are still to be finalised with the striker.
Whilst being careful not to deny our interest in taking the frontman from the Black Cats, Pardew was definitive in his take on the situation, telling TalkSPORT:
“There are some talks that have been leaked out. There is no deal in place with the player at the moment.”
You would guess that Wickham is now keen to get the deal sorted from a personal perspective, with the new league season less than a week away, but with the former Ipswich man reportedly taking home more than £60,000 a week as part of his current deal at The Stadium Of Light, there could well some last minute haggling taking place between the two parties over the finer points of his contract.
Although some Palace fans have voiced their disappointment over the club making a move for the front man, his sizeable frame and much-discussed potential give more than enough reason for us as supporters to hope that the move works out well for both the club and Connor himself.
Hopefully we’ll hear some official news over the next day or so, with Wickham signing in time to take part against Norwich at Carrow Road next weekend.
